Week 4:

Is this the future of all software products? What do you think? OK, I cut and pasted the question into Google Docs and now I cannot change the italics. It looks like it changes, but as soon as I start typing, the font reverts, as you can see. This is a serious problem in my opinion. I'm becoming so irritated that I will upload this to my blog and see if I can finish it there in more readable type.

OK, it wasn't straightforward, but I did get it to change. Notice, though, that after the 2nd sentence above, there was a double space in the document on GoogleDocs, and it disappeared. Not a promising situation for taking your info to any other format. AND, although I was given the option to give the post a title, it didn't happen.

I've enjoyed this week's lesson. Plus it was one of the shorter ones - fortunate because this was budget week for me.

I've already posted to the class blog that we would probably use the Office product in my library, because the Hospital is an Office shop. Having said that and spending more time with Zoho, I am going to experiment with Zoho at home to avoid upgrading my Office, as long as anything I do can be sent to others in a format they can read without using Zoho.

Is this the future? In the near future I suspect so for many applications, especially project-based. In the more distant future, I daren't predict. There is still the privacy issue. What I see for now is a dual system of PC based and Web based.

On to the more practical uses in my library. Because we are subscribing to fewer and fewer print journals, and for many print we have online backup, we plan to not use our OPAC for serials check-in. I have been working on a spreadsheet, but the downside to that was the ability for everyone on staff to view it. Problem solved!

I love this course...
